Haunted Halloween Weekend Trip
Put down the candy and don’t bother with a costume this year, it’s time to break away from the typical Halloween, strike out on an adventure and check out some of the scariest places in the U.S.
Adventurers beware, from a former penitentiary, and a crumbling cemetery to the infamous Whaley House, these mysterious sites are not for the faint of heart and will make for a perfect haunted Halloween weekend escapade this year.
The Whaley House (San Diego, CA)
Because it is located on top of what used to be a cemetery, it leads many to believe this is the cause behind dozens of ghost sightings and other paranormal activity at the mansion. It is said that the Whaley’s red-headed daughter sometimes appears so realistically, that she has been mistaken for a real child!
The Shanghai Tunnels (Portland, OR)
Located beneath the city of Portland, these tunnels are where many secret and illegal practices took place – including “shanghaiing”, the practice of kidnapping men to sell as crew on boats. It is believed that the tunnels are haunted by the restless spirits of the captives who died underground!
Eastern State Penitentiary (Philadelphia, PA)
This is the first prison to institute solitary confinement, and is believed to be the cause of mental illness among prisoners. Two famous prisoners that served here were Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. This haunted facility is open to the public as a museum and a Halloween haunted house in the evening.
St. Louis Cemetery (New Orleans, LA)
The voodoo queen, Marie Laveau, is buried here and is said to haunt this scary site or anyone who tries to disturb her eternal slumber. This cemetery has also been featured in the movies Easy Rider and Interview with a Vampire.
Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery (Chicago, IL)
Said to be haunted by numerous ghosts, this abandoned cemetery’s last known burial was in 1989. The Fulton family plot is known as the most prominent haunted site and is centered on the Fulton baby’s grave. People claim to have seen the ghost of the mother walking throughout the cemetery.
